The definition of child abuse and neglect varies depending on the state and it is based on standards set by federal law. March 12, 1973 was Davids lucky day. In about half an hour, Mother opened the door and told me to empty the bucket into the drain in the garage before I smelled up her house. No matter how hard I tried to meet her time limits, I couldn't make it. Mother treated David like an 'It'. Mother was completely thorough in making sure I was unable to steal any food.

After awhile, Father didn't even stay home on his days off. Shortly after the holiday, Father packs his bags and leaves forever. This incident triggered mother and she became even more hateful and violent towards David. As I breathed in the fumes, I collapsed and began spitting up. When mother gave birth to two more sons, the punishments only became harsher, as the privileges of the other boys became more luxurious.

That is my opinion of this book: It's a fake. Everyday was a new adventure filled with fun. Although he does not do the former, Dave was allowed the leftovers of his brother's cereal. Mother later starves Dave for ten days straight, and forces him to clean an unventilated bathroom with ammonia and Clorox, almost suffocating him. I worked on my chores at a snail's pace. Throughout the story, he does his best to survive from his mother and tries to stay alive from the pain of hunger, bruises and cuts he receives. It is eye-opening to see how Dave perceived the treatment of his mother, as she didn't treat Dave's other brothers this way, and how the abuse impacted his self-worth.

About his own life, Pelzer describes how he endured unthinkable abuse at the hand of his own mother. The Chicago Tribune published an article that urged readers to report child abuse when they become aware of it. While she takes good care of Ron and Stan and gives birth to another child, Russell , she denies Dave food and regularly hits him. I was so close that I could smell every morsel. Did she get some kind of help? At the end of the sixth day, and those that followed, I hoped with all my heart that Mother would feed me something, anything.

May they then move on to something better. Oh my god, what can I possibly say about this book? A Child Called It is a heart wrenching true story about one child's survival of one of the worst child abuse cases ever reported in California history. We do not guarantee that these techniques will work for you or not. Apparently, there is some doubt on whether the story is actually true, or whether the author merely made the whole thing up. I know it's the first part in a trilogy, but I doubt I'm going to read the other two books. Dave grew up, became a father, and made peace with the horrible abuse he suffered as a child. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know a real life experience of someone who dealt with child abuse in full detail.
